This cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption was built in 1814 and it is the head Church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. Inside is the Scottish Shrine to St Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland.

This cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II in May 1982 in his pastoral visit to the U. K.
