Greetings Palmina, What an odd looking bird. We have road runners in New Mexico that might be a distant cousin to this fellow. Very cool.
Cheers,
Rich

Cheryl thank you for the visit and the comment. The age old question eh? Take a look at the other cockerel crossing the road he was going after a hen.
It's legs did remind me of a Road Runner, but it couldn't have been. There wasn't a Coyote in sight and no anvils falling from the sky!
Mossip Beep beep indeed. I think I'll rename the photo.

What kind of bird is this, Palmina?? Is it a chicken? Looks like it is in a hurry crossing the road. At least it's careful. It's a great shot! Cheers, Anne

WOW!It's like the road runner of the looney tunes! Hi peppe

Great shot & funny title Palmina. He looks like he could move pretty quickly if he had to.
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 20, said:
With those small wings and big feet, he has to be a runner of some sort.
Not a roadrunner (they live in Arizona) but definitely a mover!

Palmina, I like this photo very much, it has a humorous note. It reminds me of some "important" men in black suits. :-)
My best greetings, May

Hu Guy's, Anne **icepepe* Billy Paul & May Thanks for all the comments. I don't know what kind of bird it is but it certainly does look like a runner of some kind, I did think t was some kind of water hen at first but with feet like that, I don't think so. It was funny to watch him just wander across the grass then onto the road and I do believe he looked both ways before he crossed! (??) He looked like he didn't have a care in the world. He ended up just stopping and lying down outside the local general store.

Think I've found your "runner", Palmina.
Check out THIS LINK for a picture of a Purple Gallinule.
I was looking through my National Geographic Birds of North America book for my latest uploads and I found him on the same page as the American Coot. HERE is the link to my Sacramento NWR tab.

Birdman - It certainly looks like this bird, I cant find anything in the birds of Victoria pages. Thanks for the link. Your new photo's are great!
Inessa thank you sweetie.

Thanks, Palmina. Always glad to help!
It probably isn't a Purple Gallinule (that's a north American bird), but it's certainly the same family, and I know from looking around the web that Oz does have some gallinules. Those huge feet are a dead giveaway - looks like the feet on some basketball players!

p.s. I hope you had a great borthday....I osted you a card - but the boys had nearly finished the cake....sorry!
Love, Pali
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 24, said:
That's him! Do you think he gets all red in the face from all that running? I certainly do!
I had a great birthday, apart from Sunderland losing!, Barbara and I went to a restaurant called Outback Steakhouse ("no rules, just right") and I had a filet mignon and Newcastle Brown Ale. Brown is a special occasion treat now, since I was diagnosed with Diabetes, so it's a good thing your boys ate the cake!
Cheers, Paul
Billy B@rk, on February 24, said:
Pity you didn't get a Sunderland win for your birthday Paul but I'm sure the Newcastle result would have cheered you up! Sorry Pali & Kevin*!
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 24, said:
Keegan's Kids are a sorry bunch. I actually feel bad for the Toon Army - I lived in Newcastle, within spitting distance of St. James (I did that a lot - spit at St. James) for a while.
My dad - a lifelong Sunderland fan - taught me never to hate any other team, except for Manchester United and Leeds United, and I learned to dislike Sheffield United all on my own (one of my good friends was a Wednesday fanatic).
I watched yesterday's debacle live, and I feel awful at the way the Mags defended. I honestly expect Keegan to walk away again, probably before the end of the season. He doesn't have the players he needs; can't get them until after the season and won't want the heartache when the fans turn on him the way they've turned on so many managers recently.
Pali, of course will be ecstatic at yesterday's result - she thinks Fergie walks on water or something. He hasn't done anything any other football genius with the backing of his club and hundreds of millions of pounds worth of quality players, staff and facilities wouldn't have done with the same chance.
I can't understand any REAL Geordie lass being a supporter of a team like the Old Trafford bunch, but she's not from Newcastle proper, she's from out west (Throckley is hardly true Geordieland, now is it?)

Thats a realy subttle way of putting it Paul, not at all controversial, infact I would go so far as saying that you were quite diplomatic and very constructive critique. That will go down a big bundle in Ozz. What was that about 'Blue Air' ?
Billy B@rk, on February 24, said:
I'm sorry I mentioned it now!!! ;)
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 24, said:
Don't be - we all need a chance to vent now and again.
I'm sure that, coming from Glasgow, you have strong feelings both ways about teams who play in either blue or green & white!
Paul
AXOTA, on February 24, said:
Aye, thats right Billy. Do you think its summat to do with mid-life crisis now ees 58. :) :)
Billy B@rk, on February 24, said:
Being a Glaswegian I like to see both Glasgow clubs doing well. ;)

AXOTA, on February 24, said:
Cant agree more(not wishing to enter dangerous waters here) I'm just a rugby fan anyway, nowt controversial there then!! :)
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 24, said:
Thistle - thought that was a prickly plant that nobody liked? Does the team wear purple and green like the plant?
The only good thing that came out of the other Glasgow team was Jimmy Baxter when he came to Sunderland!
Rugby - isn't that organized mayhem with a referee's whistle and no teeth?
Paul
AXOTA, on February 24, said:
Aye, the Ref has no teeth, cant blow his whistle well, hence the mayhem. Did I say nowt controversial there then ?? :) :)
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 24, said:
No teeth to go with the lack of eyesight, no doubt.

AXOTA, on February 24, said:
Well at least, it stops them from coming to blows on the terraces. It all happens on the pitch.

Paul Glad you had a good night out and celebrated your birthday well.
I don't know what I did to deserve the Geordie comments, but never mind.
As far as the football goes, well....I'm not getting involved except to say, the reason why this Geordie lass supports Man U is that when I was a kid and before I knew anything of football, Bobby Charlton and his brother Jack used to treated me and my cousin with great respect and always had time for us when I visited my Aunt and Uncle in Ashington. He was always a very nice person and when I started watching football that stuck in my mind. It was for the man not the club. Man U may have millions to throw at players as do an awful lot of teams, e.g. Newcastle and Michael Owen and Mark Viduka but money doesn't always make a team, teamwork makes a team...just ask Barnsley after they beat their Million dollar peers Liverpool. I like to watch any good game of football never mind who's playing. Oops sorry, it looked like I did have something to say after all.
Be good

Hi Pali. Never seen one in the wild but here is a "close up"
Coal Miner's Boy, on February 25, said:
I hope you realize I was kidding about the Geordie stuff, Palmina - in the same way I'm a "Frenchman" to you.
I love football - I play on a 7-a-side coed team, coach a girls under-12 team, and watch English, Italian, Argentinian and any other footie I can on the "box". I'm the biggest fan of our local high school girls team, simply because I've coached most of them when they were younger.
The Barnsley result was incredible - it's what the FA cup is all about as far as I'm concerned. I worked in Barnsley for a while installing electronics in the new General Hospital there and got to see them play a bit back in the mid-70's.
Hope we're still friends,
Paul

Very beautiful photo of this intrepid "calamón", dear Palmina. Here in Spain it is possible to see it in wetlands of the Valley of the Guadalquivir, because of other places it is disappearing.
Un abrazo, Arturo.

It is sad when species are disappearing. We are lucky in Australia to have such diversity but still many species are very threatened by development. It would be sad to lose so many creatures.
Thank you for your lovely comments Arturo my best regards, Palmina
