The original Castle was build in 1313 by Erik Menved. The castle was demolished in 1320, and rebuild in 1343 by King Valdemar Atterdag and served as a feudal castle under the Crown until 1660. In 1672 the buildings were demolished, but large parts them remain as ruins.
