Dilapidated & Abandoned Roadhouse

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

I have been watching this old roadhouse fade away without noticing for decades. It is shown in black and white because that was the media of its heyday which I imagine was in the years immediately after WWII before the interstates were even conceived when US Route 1 was the north/south "main drag" along the east coast of the US. You have to imagine it as it was then; gas pumps out front in the style of the time with the round globes and the Texaco star at the top, a small restaurant or at least sandwich counter and soda fountain at one end and a a mom and pop grocery at the other end of the ground floor and upstairs several rooms of a place to crash. Can't tell you anything about the quality; maybe it was a flophouse, maybe it was pretty nice or maybe it was both at various times in its history. But there you have it - a combination motel, truck stop, fast food joint and 7-11, all under one roof. One drawback for sure though; no a/c!

(Submitted to the September, 2012 Panoramio contest in the category A place to crash with the former title A Place to Crash: A Contrarian Viewpoint; to the 2013 December TTT contest as entry #88 with the title Abandoned Roadside Grocery; and, to the 2014 June CFP contest as entry #35.)

Thanks Adem. Since the building was in its prime during the first half of the 20th century, a B&W era in photgraphy, I elected to show it the same way.

Best wishes from the USA, Mark

What really gets me about this picture is that it has a satellite dish.
