Welcome jbastianelli,--Rarely are there so few climbers of these steps, it was a bitterly cold day with a biting northerly wind.

Jean. Can you imagine the coffin bearers having to carry the dead to their final resting place at the top of these steps. I wonder how many succumbed to the lords calling in the process?

Good photo and viewpoint of the steep cobbled road for the horses in the old days and the steps for pedestrians to the abbey. Quite a steep climb, as I remember, even for a veteran mountain climber like myself!

Great angle, it is as if i am there, and that is hard to capture ! Afterall, photo's are 2 dimensional, while in real life 3 dimensions count. Well done !

Would you believe that some drivers attempt to descend the road seen to the left of the steps?

Apparently, drivers follow instructions from their SATNAV and make this suicidal journey!! The gradient at the base of this road is in excess of 40 degrees..Only a serious 4 wheel drive vehicle could manage to complete this without damage..

Originally, the steps (199) were built to assist the delivery of coffins to the Parish church above ;>) It is thought that several coffin bearers fell victim to the energy sapping journey, no doubt keeping the undertakers busy!

Jim, but one should be crazy to go down to such toad!!!

The uncle of my father was living in a house where the main street makes 90 degree of angle, just after the road goes down from the mountain, very dangerous place. I really do not know how many times their house was destroyed and how many big trucks finished in their house. Once the uncle of my father just went outside in the garden when a truck entered in their house. The other time was worst, trying to rebuild the house some of her relatives died because another one truck arrived and killed him. After this case maybe the major at the end spent some money to built some not so high wall there in front of the house. Sincerely last years I do not know if this helped or not. But crazy drivers are everywhere unfortunately...
