Ruins part of the complex of the Roman Forum

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The history of the Roman Agora (or Agora of Caesar and Augustus) begins with the donation of Julius Caesar in 51 BC for the construction market. In 47 BC when Julius Caesar visited Athens seems prepared plans and maybe some work started, but stopped. The main work, however, started and completed by the time between August 19 and 11 BC The Roman Forum was the first organized commercial center of Athens. There he transferred all commercial activities and trade in particular olive oil. The building was almost square with inner colonnade that housed shops. It had two entrances: one east Ionic and Doric western one is known as the "Gate of Athena Archegetis" from the inscription on the architrave.
