cf National Geographic, August, 2012: Theory has it that the bolt comes from above, i.e. the sky and is met by its counterpart that leaves solid ground fractions of a second later.
I did this picture with my Pentax camera. I guess the reason why I captured it like I did is that the shutter terminated exposure before the two bolts could fully unite. Exposure time 3 seconds during daytime. No rain - yet.
