Port Carling. United Church, completed 1878 (Est. 1872)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Port Carling United Church. Originally Methodist, it was built in 1872 on land deeded to Rev. Lachlan Taylor by the Crown. In 1925 it became United after a failed merger with the Presbyterian Church.

Port Carling was once called Obajewanung, which means "meeting place" in Ojibway. Ojibway Sandy Island Band (orginaly from Georgian Bay, who settled there about 1854, which makes it one of the oldest community in the area. The Ojibway natives where forced from their homes in 1870, by the Canadian government.

The light was lousy on this overcast day, so a bit more contrast and the b&w treatment was my attempt to save this shot.

An interesting shot!

In Germany, the power lines and telephone cables are underground! This is a benefit for the photographer!

Have a nice weekend,

I am so used to the wires now, that I do not register them.

The reason is cost, labour and winters.

Nobody wants to dig the trench at -20 c to fix or add a wire. Few years ago (January 1998)large part of Quebec and Ontario were days without power (some up to 3 weeks)as ice storm brought down power lines everywhere. 28 people died.
