Sometimes, you just have to change your path a little bit to find a new perspective...

I had walked by this monument on the Heumarkt (hay market) so often. That square, ironically, had been considered one of the most beautiful squares of Europe in the 17th century. The late 19th and 20th century destroyed that impression. First, they built a new brigde across the Rhine, and a new street that cut Heumarkt in two pieces.

Then came to bomb raids of world war II, and the hurried repairs after that. In recent years, they tried to restore some of the old beauty, but Heumarkt is still a far cry from what it must have looked like in its heyday.

So I never gave much attention to it. Walking by, I usually took an underground passage from this, the bigger part of the square to the smaller one.

On the day I took this picture, for a reason I really don't know I tried to cross the street not underground, but via the traffic light. It was red, I turned around, and my whole impression of Heumarkt changed in an instance...
