The gate, the oldest wooden structure in the city, was built in 1395 during the reign of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty.
Namdaemun, which means “great southern gate,” then served as the primary entrance to Seoul. It was part of the fortress walls that once protected the capital from invaders.
The gate went through a major renovation in 1961, and was designated National Treasure No. 1 the following year.
