Xanthi is the capital of the homonymous district in Thrace (Thraki), about 35 km from the sea and 70 km from Kavala. Mentioned in antiquity by Strabo, the city began to refer mainly during the Byzantine era. The whole area flourished mainly at the 18th and 19th century, thanks largely to the plantations of the famous tobacco of the area. The houses of the old town are magnificent and it was called "The little Paris".
Nowadays the city has its university and a beautiful night - life, because of the students and it is famous for the carnival, better known as "the festivities of the old town" and also for the Manos Hadzidakis festival
About 20 km from Xanthi, near the sea is situated the antique city of Avdira, birth place of Democritus, father of the nuclear physics. Other points of interest are Toxotes and the delta of Nestos river , Pomakohoria, small villages at the north, Vistonis lake and Porto - Lagos at the proximity of the lake with the sea.
