Lleva su nombre este volcán por el nombre que se le da a la cara de los caballos que poseen una mancha en frente. La erupción del Volcán Malacara es denominado hidromagmática, dado que se produce cuando el magma entra en contacto con el agua y se caracteriza por ser una erupción muy violenta. La erosión de las “tetras” (material volcánico depositado en finas capas laminas) y el desgaste que aportan el agua y el viento han dado origen a pasadizos, cárcavas y chimeneas con casi 30 metros de altura.
