This is a replica of Christopher Columbus's Flag ship which was built on the island of Madeira between July 1997 and July 1998 in the village of Camara de Lobos by Robert Wijntje, a Dutchman, and by local craftsmen. Christopher Colombus was born in 1451 and spent many years in the Portuguese Merchant Navy often calling in Madeira on various occasions. In 1479 Columbus married Filipa Perestrello daughter of the first governor of nearby Puerto Santo and they settled on that island until moving to Madeira in about 1480. In 1492 after many years of being refused permission, the King and Queen of Spain agreed to fund his voyage in search of the Indies and he set sail with three ships, the Pinta, the Nina and the Santa Maria on a voyage which eventually led him to America. The Santa Maria sails twice a day, every day, and heads west stopping by Cabo Girao for a swim and the tour lasts three hours.
