If eighteen months ago someone had told me that I'd go up in a hot air balloon and travel on a cable car I'd have thought them mad! Now I've done both! From the rack railway of old times to the sophisticated cable car of today Funchal is again connected to the breathtaking beauty of Monte situated in the hills above the city. Departure is at the park at Almirante Reis located in the old part of town. The top end at Monte is situated near Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. The inclined course is 3,718 metres and has a vertical rise of 560 feet. The 39 cabins with eight seats each can transport 800 passengers per hour. At the onset of the 20th century the steam train performed the task of bringing tourists to the Monte hills but now 100 years later the cable car has the job.
