As the road from Monte to Funchal is one long downward slope 160 years ago one of the locals decided to employ a more radical form of transport mounting a flimsy wicker basket on a pair of ski-like wooden runners. It was discovered that you could glide down and reach the city in ten minutes. All it needed was a hefty push and someone standing on the rear and in no distance at all you would reach speeds of 30mph! Today they are for holidaymakers only and two carreiros guides dressed in traditional white with straw hats propel you down a shortened route. There are no seatbelts and the only brake is the rubber sole of the driver's shoe! Needless to say having gone up by cable car I returned the same way!!!
