Church Saints Constantine and Helen

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

The Church of Constantine and Helen was built upon decision of the then Mayor of Volos Spyros Spyridis, designed by architect Aristotelis Zachos. Founations in 1927 and inaugurated on 18 May 1936 with pomp and grandeur, by the then Bishop of Demetrias Joachim. It is basilica, lined with stone externally. The roof of the church is covered with Byzantine tiles and, in the south side stands majestic bell tower. It is worth noting that the final draft of Arist. Zachos was based on experiences of the same, during the restoration of St Demetrius of Thessaloniki. Aristotle Zachos (1871-1939)was a leading figure of the Greek architecture of the 20th century. studied architecture at the three major southern German Universities, Technical Universities of Munich, Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. There you will receive a solid education by leading architects and theorists, as was Friedrich von Thiersch (1852-1921), ο Karl Schafer (1844-1908) and Josef Durm (1837-1919).He was a distinguished Greek architect and city planner, the who designed many churches, public and private buildings under Byzantine and traditional standards, thereby restoring the 'Greekness' in modern Greek architecture. For the great work will be honored by the Academy in 1931 with the prize of literature and arts.
