Margerie Glacier Calving (#1) [w/comment]

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

By the time one hears the crack/boom of breaking and falling ice, the ice has already hit the surface of the inlet. But there had been some

smaller ice falls at this spot, and so I had aimed my camera, with a "larger" lens, and just started clicking off shots as soon as I saw

movement of the ice. Just lucky. The size of the glacier terminus is huge (thousands of feet), so I estimate this impact to be hundreds

of feet.

For a capture of a REALLY huge chunk of ice hitting the water, check out DWGPhoto's shot at ...

Hey Urszula ... thank you very much for the compliments, and especially for the Like, Favorite, and the Vote in the contest. I saw ice starting to fall and just clicked off shots until I ran out of film (really, I was using an old-fashioned film-body camera at the time, with a 280mm lens.) Best regards, Wally

hey Teresa, it's always good to hear from you. Thanks for the visit and all the Likes. Especially thank you for this Favorite. The landscape in Alaska is so huge, it is easy to get one's perspective out-of-whack: "objects in viewfinder are wa-a-ay farther away than they appear" and bigger than one could imagine. Y'all have a great day, Wally
