FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT HOME and STUDIO ~ Home Entrance

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Frank Lloyd Wright (born Frank Lincoln Wright, June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer and educator, who designed more than 1,000 structures and completed 500 works. Wright believed in designing structures which were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. This philosophy was best exemplified by his design for Fallingwater (1935), which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture". Wright was a leader of the Prairie School movement of architecture and developed the concept of the Usonian home, his unique vision for urban planning in the United States. His work includes original and innovative examples of many different building types, including offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, and museums. Wright also designed many of the interior elements of his buildings, such as the furniture and stained glass. Wright authored 20 books and many articles and was a popular lecturer in the United States and in Europe. His colorful personal life often made headlines, most notably for the 1914 fire and murders at his Taliesin studio. Already well known during his lifetime, Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time."

The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park, Illinois, has been restored by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust to its appearance in 1909, the last year Frank Lloyd Wright lived there with his family. Frank Lloyd Wright purchased the property and built the home in 1889 with a $5,000 loan from his employer Louis Sullivan. He was 22 at the time, and newly wed to Catherine Tobin. The Wrights raised six children in the home. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and declared a National Historic Landmark four years later.

Marlene, I'm glad I found your gallery. I'm an enthusiastic follower of Frank Lloyd Wright and have been to a few of his buildings.(See my gallery) Visiting his work in Chicago is on my list. Thanks for sharing your FLW photos! The details are especially nice. -Fallingwater

Then I'm glad you found my gallery also, Fallingwater, and hope you enjoyed it. I have a few more FLW houses to post this week. If you are a big fan (and I assume you are by your name), then a trip to Chicago would definitely be worth your while... lots to see! Thanks for stopping by...

Marlene,

I'll look for more postings in your gallery this week. Thanks. I just finished reading a couple of the newer books out about FLW and now know more about his early work in Chicago.

Cheers, Fallingwater
