Durch das Erdbeben wird eine gewaltige Felsplatte mit Eis von der Nordwestflanke des Huascaran gelöst (dunkler Bereich oben) und stürzt in das Nebental von Yungay (heller Bereich, Bildmitte). Durch die Reibungsenergie verwandelt sich diese in eine riesige Schlamm - und Gerölllawine.
