The mountain has its name from Gonario, Judge (king) of Torres during the 12th century. Tradition ascribes to him the construction of the shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom he voted himself as he was sinking during a storm. Legend has it that a light, coming from the mountain that takes its name, oriented him in the storm and allowed him to reach the coast. When he was 40, Gonario abdicated and retired to Clairvaux, where he died almost 70.
