Silence of the Sand
The Aekingerzand, (zand= sand) or Kale Duinen (Lit. Bald Dunes), is mainly a shifting sand area. The Aekingerzand has been restored in the last few years by the Dutch Forestry Commission as trees and scrubs prevented the sand from shifting. Many trees and scrubs where removed and cut down to open-up the area.
This typical landscape is dominated by wide sandy areas, dunes, heather and Pines. Lots of special animals can be found here. Beautiful mosses and lichens in many varieties grow on old tree trunks and sheltered places.
It's a magnificent place of high natural value.
