This replica Dutch windmill was built as a habitable house by a family of nostalgic Dutch immigrants in the mid twentieth century. It became an immediate landmark. The family established the Dutch Windmill retail plant nursery on the same block and quickly generated a reputation for unusual exotic plants. They established a coffee house beneath the building at the lefty of the photo which became as popular as their nursery. The windmill is adjacent to the entrance of the retail facility. After many decades of providing for plant enthusiasts, management of the popular operation changed hands in early 2008. The Jandakot area was once regarded almost as sandy rural wasteland, the water table was only a few feet below the surface. During the past decade it has been increasingly targeted by urban developers; and land values have soared.

This photo was taken from the car park and is facing in a south westerly direction. For more information on it visit Fremantlebiz - 3 March, 2008.
