i agree, it is a wonderful plavce to paint, but all or most of the thanks go to the glacial movement, about 400 million years ago great photo mate! b-)x

Thanks for the compliment, Trikermike, but Whin Sill was formed from volcanic and seismic activity rather than glacial movement.

"Formed of dolerite (a basaltic rock) 295 million years ago (MYA), the Whin Sill is part of a sheet of rock stretching from Teesdale, home of various Waterfalls, along a northerly line to Berwick, home of the Farne Islands. Lindisfarne Castle strategically takes advantage of a high, rocky cliff line formed by the sill.

The Whin Sill complex is usually divided into three components: Holy Island Sill, Alnwick Sill and the Hadrian's Wall-Pennines Sill, which were created by separate magma flows but about the same time."

Hey Skida ok, i'm not a geologist! interesting though, but the crags would not have been exposed without the glacier, yes? a reply would be appreciated, as always

I'm no geologist either and I don't know the answer. Looking at the satelite image, Whin Sill looks like a big fault line like the San Andreas so maybe the land north of the line fell away during an earthquake, but it could have been glacial action or weathering that exposed the crags. The answer may be out there on the interwebby thing!

I am assured that the Whin Sill is an extension from GIANTS CAUSEWAY, aal the way ower til (TO) the Longstone lighthouse, Farne islands.. seems to fit in my book too Skida ! xcuse da delay, i bin away for a mini break in scotland with my mates

Hi skida, after exhausting research (about 10 mins) i find that the Whin Sill was formed by molten lava being squeezed oot through the rock (see digram) then coolin' doon geet fast like, mekkin it aal gan rather columnar, as it's a basaltic rock it forms these geometric shapes when it cools doon. HEOR IS WAN O' THEM LINK THINGYS TO SHOW ME POINT IN WORDS WHAT MEK SENSE!
