According to Bede, King Oswald erected a cross on the high ground (where the church now stands) on the eve of his battle against the welsh, after a vision in which St Columba prophesised victory. The present cross by the roadside was erected in the 1930s to commemorate the battle. Extra Info

Thanks for visiting meteocoll. The flowerpots normally sit around the bottom of the cross, but someone had moved them because it was windy. Maybe that is how one got broken.

On yonder hill there stood a cross
Of timber roughly hewn
Erected by Oswald, King of old
For victory , in battle soon
Cadwallon he was to fight to save
Golden Kindom of Northumbria there
The Celts had threatened to overcome
Then foul the land and air
So Oswald prayed with all his men
And though they were but few
Fought the fiendish Celts and won
The Battle of Heavenfield
So stranger, traveller tourist here
Read of Christian ity's birth upon this isle
For peace then reigned with Gods true will
Because of battle on this hill. Mike C

Aye, skida thanks marra just snatches of history from considerable knowledge base, coupled with a bit of Googling, mate!
lots more to the story, for instance how Oswald went on to Iona to entice the first settlement on Lindisfarne, to bring CHRISTIANITY TO THE gOLDEN kINGDOM of Northumbria, etc., etc., etc., and so on and so forth....ad infinitum-but it's too long for a wee poem!
