Meltdown 3: Tasman Glacier and its Lateral Moraine across the mouth of the Murchison Valley, NZ

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

We were flying past The Nun's Veil, with this grand view of the Tasman Glacier. I was enthralled. At this point the Tasman is moraine covered, and has a high lateral moraine heaped up along its side. This lateral moraine runs across the entrance of the large tributary valley of the Murchison river and Glacier.

The ice etched steep rocky slopes and their mantle of scree in the foreground add to the glacial drama depicted.

I was in a geomorphologists heaven throughout this flight, I assure you!
