Greetings Berend.

As a child, whenever we travelled this road, I always looked forward to driving through the valley in the background. It seemed pretty, and homely, there. The forests on the higher slopes included rainforest species and hoop pine trees; the lower slopes were cultivated by orchards of pawpaws, mangoes, bananas; and there were roadside stalls selling the farm produce where we could buy an icecream or a drink as well.

The route of the old highway can be seen coursing its way along the side of the range on the left of the present highway.

It has changed gradually, and while there are still some fruit trees, most of the land and slopes are now grazed, and the traffic on the divided highway flies by without a pause.
