Mountain Goat at Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana

The mountain goat, also known as the Rocky Mountain goat, is a large-hoofed mammal found only in North America. Despite its name, it is not a member of Capra, the genus that includes the wild goats from which the domestic goat is derived. The mountain goat is an even-toed ungulate that belongs to the subfamily known as Caprinae or goat-antelopes. Mountain goats are the largest mammals found in North America high-altitude habitats, which reach elevations of 13,000 feet (4,000 m) or more. Average height at shoulder, 3.5 ft (1 m) and weigh 100 to 300 lbs (45 to 136 kg) Throughout the year, the animals usually stay above the tree line, but they will migrate seasonally to higher or lower elevations within that range.
