It was founded in the 7th or 6th century BC. Its primary name is probably related to Ptolemy III Euergetes. In later Roman times its name was changed to Tolmeta. Like Cyrene the city was destroyed by the earthquake in 365.
Gebel el-Akhdar, that means "green mountains", are seen in the background.
New archaeological excavations in Ptolemais began in 2001. A very intersting web site is available here.
