The 'Arch of Titus is a triumphal arch to a single archway (ie with only one arch), located on the northern slopes of the Palatine , in the western part of the Forum of Rome . A masterpiece of ' Roman art , this is the monument-symbol of ' Flavian era , thanks to substantial innovations in both the architectural and structural, both in artistic and sculptural. The inscription on the attic (west side, facing the Forum) bears the dedication of the monument by the Senate to the Emperor Titus (born in 41 , emperor from 79 to ' 81 ), referred to as "divus" and then back to its death in 81 . Within the 90 had to be concluded. The 'arch was erected in memory of the Jewish war waged by Titus in Galilee. In 69, the year of four emperors, Vespasian returned to Rome to claim the throne, leaving Titus in Judea to put an end to the revolt, which Titus made the following year, Jerusalem was sacked, the Temple was destroyed. In the rich spoils it included the seven-branched candlestick, and the trumpets of silver. Much of the population killed or forced to flee the city. On his return to Rome in 71 was received in triumph. In the Middle Ages the arch was built in the fortress of the Frangipane and is represented in numerous prints crowned by a battlement brick, until the restoration of 1823 to Raffaele Stern and Giuseppe Valadier , remember the inscription of Pope Pius VII on the east side (towards the Colosseum ), the attic. From the sixteenth century, under Pope Paul II and Pope Sixtus IV , the first repairs were made to the bow which consisted of the demolition of some buildings on the south side and construction of a buttress. Then the arch was incorporated into the structures of the monastery of Santa Francesca Romana (formerly Santa Maria Nova) and only in 1812 - 24 began the intervention of liberation itself, supra. Further work conducted in 1901 - 02, consisting in lowering the road level, it brought to light the foundations Another Arch of Titus, which no longer stood in the Circus Maximus .
