All over England Sequoiadendron giganteum from high altitudes (8000 ft +) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California thrive in lime soil in the gardens of stately homes and in churchyards. But Sequoia sempervirens Redwoods originating from low altitudes along the coast of California barely survive. Here we can see the two growing side by side.

I might add that the Sierra Redwood is the tall one on the left and the scraggly looking one on the right is the Coast Redwood. In California, though, the Coast Redwood grows by far the taller.
