Kayan or long-necked Karen lady refugee from Myanmar, Ban Huai Suea Thao, Mae Hong Son แม่ฮ่องสอน, Thailand

Not selected for Google Earth or Google Maps [?]

This woman lives in a refugee village, there are three different hilltribes here, Kayan or Karen, Kayaw and another oops I forgot. The entry fee is free for Thai people but 250 baht for farang (the foreigner), she said she used to get about 1000 baht a month from the people taking admission, but now only gets some rice, not enough to feed family. Anything she sells however she keeps all. Sad really, tour companies bringing people here probably make a lot of money. I got here by road, but maybe impassable during rainy season (may to october). Possibly by boat during rainy season.

Interesting photo of a long-necked woman, never saw this before. And yes, the behaviour of many tour operators in Southeast Asia is ruthless and shameful. Also hill tribe people have got a dignity, and they are not like animals in a zoo. Proper recompense should be the least they receive. Once, however,I saw them strike back: A bus with tourists stopped on a street near Chiang Mai where some hill tribe people were waiting for a bus. The tourist bus stopped and most tourists went out to take photos of the tribespeople. They, in turn, picked up stones and threw them against the tourists. They fled in the bus which was hard-hit by stones, too. The bus drove off and, honestly, my sympathy was with the tribepeople. ** Jürgen greets you from Germany.
