I'd heard of Mesa Verde as a schoolboy but it took me 40 years to actually get there. I hadn't realised that these buildings were originally on the top of the plateau. As the weather got colder the indians dismantled them, threw all the building material over the cliff and re-built their houses in the caces at the cliff-foot.
