Every year the city of Virginia Beach with the backing of one or more corporate sponsors in essence decorates the beach for about 30 blocks with a display called "Holiday Lights". Many of the hotels also participate decorating their beachfront facades and grounds. The boardwalk is closed to pedestrians and opened to vehicles. Admission is charged and you can drive slowly through, viewing the lights on the beach on one side and the hotels, etc., on the other. Or, if you prefer, you can walk at no charge. This display refers to the Christmas carol of the same name.
