Kalamaria is a region and municipality of Thessaloniki. Located in the southeastern part of the agglomeration of the city and its perimeter is surrounded by the 2/3 of sea.
The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times yet, as evidenced by findings at Cape Karabournaki. The name Kalamaria first appeared in 1083 and was reported throughout the region southeast of Thessaloniki and not only in the current municipality.
During the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empire, the area was almost uninhabited. In 1920 he became the first settlements of refugees from Georgia, Russia. But the truly massive colonization occurred after the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922. Overall it is estimated that up to 100,000 refugees settled in Thessaloniki, especially in the suburbs. Many of them, particularly Pontian origin settled in Kalamaria. The installation of the people from Pontos was the beginning of modern history of Kalamaria.
