Hi Berend,

In this photo there was a minor flood passing down the Mary River, the white water turbulence being the point at which the river passes over the Mary River Barrage. The barrage was built to limit tidal waters flowing further upstream on high tides in times of drought, and to store fresh water to allow it to be pumped out into an irrigation canal that supplies canefields in this district.

This area is very close to Maryborough where the sugar industry really got started in Queensland, from 1865.
