The brown fleet is the designation for professional passenger transport (charter) with traditional sailing boats and motor boats in the Netherlands.
The fleet consists of over 500 vessels, which in the past transported cargo. Currently with these ships sailing holidays can be made ranging from 1 day to more than 4 weeks. The term refers to the original color of the sailing on these ships. The color developed by the waning of the sails with cachou.
Most of these vessels are of the flat bottom and around construction, but there are also other types like the river clipper . Often all sailing monuments seen as "brown fleet" , but certainly not all historic ships are still used professionally. Ships of the Fleet sail mainly on the Markermeer, the IJsselmeer and at the Wadden Sea
