The first monastery was built in 657 by King Oswy of Northumberland (Land north of the River Humber). And in that year, Hild (Hilda) became the founding abbess. In 867 the abbey fell to Viking attack.
In 1078 the abbey was re-founded by Regenfrith (Reinferd) a soldier monk, under the orders of his protector, the Norman, William de Percy.
In 1539 or 1540 the Norman abbey was destroyed by Henry VIII in his Dissolution of the Monasteries.
I have done night shots from this very location three times to date, and have discovered that there seems to be an area of about one foot square in which to get it. The conical points either side of the gable-end are reflected nicely in the pond where there is an absence of reeds. If I step forward I end up in the boggy area where only amphibians are meant to dwell. Step back, the point's are out of the reflection. Same either side. But it is a shot I really enjoy doing. And I will try and bring you differing seasonal shots in good time,
To answer a few... This here is a panoramic of five individual shots taken in portrait. Each shot was a 30 second exposure, all at iso 200. I used an f-stop of 9.5 and a focal length of 18mm. The still night and overcast sky helped a lot, too So does a laser pointer to keep the ducks from disrupting the water.
I processed this in Lightroom 4 by adding a little exposure, some clarity which seems to sharpen the shot without adding noise. I then reduced the noise in the entire image whilst being zoomed in to ensure no loss of detail. Afterwhich I used a brush tool to further reduce noise from the sky and pond. I found that I had to do this editing in this order, otherwise the result was different.
Also, I don't use filters, as I don't have any. But filters cause excessive light-flare in night shots. Just incase you are planning this shot yourself.
