Apapane, Hawaii Forest Bird. James Brennan Molokai. The Hawaiian Apapane is a type of finch and part of the Hawaiian honeycreeper subfamily. Their brilliant red feathers were used to make the capes, helmets and leis of the Hawaiian ali'i (royalty). These small birds are nectar drinkers and pollinate tree flowers as they feed. They are active singers and are rarely seen on the ground.
