Gympie began as a gold mining centre in the late 1860s, but eventually transitioned to a service centre for a dairying, agriculture and grazing area. The region has large reserves of forest and plantation forestry and thus the timber industry is also a significant employer in the city.
Southside, the suburban area on left of image today has a population of around 5,600 and the town of Gympie on the right of photo has more than 10,000 people. Altogether Gympie Urban Area has a population of 19,510 (2011 census).
