Apapane. James Brennan Molokai Hawaii. Apapane is a type of finch and part of the Hawaiian honeycreeper subfamily. Their brilliant red feathers were used to make capes, helmets and leis for Hawaiian ali'i (royalty). These small birds are nectar drinkers and pollinate tree flowers as they feed and are active singers. This photo was taken at Haleakala National Park on Maui. Photo by James Brennan Hawaii
