Black Bear on Grinnell Glacier Trail , Glacier National Park, Montana

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Hiking Grinnell Glacier Trail with my family we came across this Black Bear just below the trail eating berries.

The Black Bear color ranges from black to light blonde. Cinnamon coloured Black Bears are quite common in the western US.

Black Bears have large pointed ears. Grizzly bears ears are short and rounded. Grizzly Bears also have a shoulder hump. Black Bears do not.

I saw a program on TV showing the Canadian Rocky's. The black bears are realy black. Is the brown color a different kind or is the period of the year?

Hi Gradus,

Most people think of Black Bears as Black. The Black Bear color actually ranges from black to light blonde. Cinnamon coloured black bears are quite common in the western US.

Thanks for the info about black bears not totally black. Are black bears vicious like the grizzly? Nice shot....

Doug Best on February 20, 2013

Hi Lilibeth Borra,

Thank you for the kind comments! Black Bears are generally not thought to be as aggressive as Grizzlys but each situation and Bear is different.

Greetings and Best Regards, Doug
