Annick, now 5:20am and I'm up and about to go to work. Over in the Chathams, where this photo was taken, it is 6:05am

The trees behind are behind a fence. Tony

Vkeith, no tsunami here, but the islands would be in real danger if a big one did arrive. Check out my Chatham Islands tag, and look for other photos with Hapupu in the title. Also, use the Google Earth map to see that there are few trees in this area. TR

Oh yes, this is a very special place... Is there any life in the trees left? Or is everything gone?

This is a great picture, Tony! I really like it!

Cheers, Sabine

Tony Reid, on May 9, 2008, said:

Sabine, the trees at the front are very much dead. Most of the trees at the rear are behind a fence, but not all of them. The rest of the area to the right looks like this.

About 350m to the left is the beach. Cheers, Tony

Hi Tony, this is too sad to see!! Ciao mariarosa

Tony Reid, on August 17, 2008, said:

Mariarosa, yes it is sad, but just beyond is area of trees that looks like this! That growth was due to the area being fenced off from cattle and sheep.

Cheers, Tony

Really cattle and sheeps can do that? How many of them are there in this area?Ciao mariarosa

Tony Reid, on August 18, 2008, said:

Mariarosa - I don'tthink they stripped the trees, but they do eat the undergrowth. Since the fence was put up, the forest area has thrived.

I'll see if I can find out what happened to these trees.

Cheers, Tony

Very nice shot too!! Yes sheeps can destroy very big forests! In Greece the laws on the pasturage are very strict and the shepherds should be very careful with their flocks!

Alberi morti può essere molto interessante, Primo. Vorrei solo che avevo una migliore inquadratura.

The Captivating Chathams

Now who could survive on this desolate place without a wee bit Cannibalism now and again, You can get awfully fed up with Mutton Birds and Crayfish Tails. LOL scally

Tony Reid, on January 19, 2009, said:

However, it wasn't desolate until the pakeha came in and cleared all the land of trees for grazing of sheep & cattle.

Also, Scally, the Chathams are renowned for their seafood. Most excellent (and big) crays, and tasty blue cod.

Cheers, Tony
