Bistro 990 - Gawwwwn!

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

I posted a photo of this very same building (which is now no more) nearly four years ago. It used to be a very decent restaurant until about one year ago, when it got shot down, advertising itself (with some justification) as the favorite of the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) crowd. Some dishes on their menu were great, some - simply decent. R.I.P., Bistro 990! A 32-story condo tower (yes, another one!) is coming up in its place. Notice of new construction, posted in the spring 2012 is here.

Note to reviewer: this is part of Toronto urban history - the building, now demolished, was a landmark, to many intents and purposes (perhaps in all, except in legal status), and its demolition is at least a somewhat important occurrence. Planning to post the image of the final (for now) condo once it comes up.

Do you know if this was initiated by the owner, or by the city?

Tom, I think the city was responsible for this. Come to think of it, I wouldn't really know. I've read that the owner/manager of the "old" restaurant retired, but have no idea if or how he gave up the property.

Thanks for the link about urban renewal.
