Sea Salt recovery. Leaving home from the Chao Samran beach, we came up on this fascinating scene of colourful salt workers carrying the dry salt to the storage. They looked like ants going up and down the edges of the salt pools. Not much changed in this process for few hundred years!
I was not driving, so I did not want to impose on my friend to stay longer, but I wished, I got more time there.

This kind of landscape and life in the salt pan is slowly vanishing. Since I started birding, I have had many opportunities to travel to places and talk to the locals. Most children of traditional Thai farming families now go to colleges and universities so they are no longer interested in doing such backbreaking works for little income their parents did. (Sounds good, eh?) Many salt pans and paddy fields have been sold to giant conglomerates and turned into either Industrial Parks or modern, large-scale agricultural farmlands. The same farmers are being turned into these conglomerates' employees. While a lot of customs and traditions were lost.
They might look poor now but they are very much self-reliant. I am not sure if they will become poorer and more vulnerable as their destiny will now be determined by giant agri companies like CP and Betagro!
If you visit Thailand again one day in the future, who know you would be served with "Vietnamese" or "Cambodian" rice dishes and "Burmese" fruits on the table.
Greetings from Thailand

Yes, it is a sad situation. I do hear, that people are complaining that Chinese vegetables are now sold in Thailand.
But in Canada, the situation is almost the same, just different industries. Manufacturing is almost gone in Ontario. I worked for 10 different employers. There is not even one of the engineering companies in business, I used to work for!!
