Ghost Ship

The parking lot where I left my car while I was shooting this last series of pictures is adjacent to Neptune's Park between the boardwalk and Atlantic Avenue. I took the photos more or less in the order they are presented here; first the Neptune Statue, then the views across the beach; and, finally those along the boardwalk. At that point I turned my back on the ocean and walked to the west across the parking lot and took the two photos immediately preceding this one in the series, among others. Then, maybe five minutes after I turned away from the beach, I started back to my car, heading east again towards the ocean, and I noticed some lights through the gloom fairly close to the shore and a little of a shadow, so I went back to the edge of the boardwalk and could discern this ship apparently anchored. As you can see she is only 100 - 200 yards (100 - 200m.) offshore and quite large; I would guess about 1,000 tons displacement. I hung about for a few minutes, but there was no further activity, so I left. I looked in the shipping news the next day but found no mention of the ship or what she was doing there.

Thanks for this addition to Planes and Boats and Trains, Mark. The lashing rain and dimly seen ship give a real sense of surrealism to the scene. Greetings from the UK, Matthew
