It's fascinating how the ridged sand smooths out on the inside of this bowl, and the change from blue shadows to yellow highlights is really beautiful. From this perspective, the distance certainly looks a long way off, yet still very clear.
Are you facing north/south? Is that the reason for your unusual title?
Cheers, Ryan

Thanks for your nice comments, Ryan. I really appreciate it. The ripples remind me of a type of dune referred to as linear or longitudinal dune in miniature. If you look on the imagery, you'll see that the dunes I took the photo from are crescent-shaped parabolic dunes. I thought it was cool that there were really two in one.
Also the name "White Sands" is somewhat of misnomer, because the 'sand' is not really sand, but gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), which is much more soluable in water, and has very different properties than the normal silica sand. There are only a few gypsum deserts on the planet. White Sands is the largest.

Truly breathtaking. If it weren't for the dry plants (and the New Mexico tag) I would probably have thought this was a very fantastic and curious snowy landscape. Anyway, it's a really wonderful photo.
Thanks for sharing!

YS for this marvellous photo, Eve! Received just at the correct time, so that the character of the landscape comes to the validity well! And it is for the astonishment! I could not imagine, that there is a desert landscape with snow-white sand dunes of pure gypsum! That is certain only possible, because the area is very dry.
Greetings of Vienna, Manfred

Your White Sands images are wonderful Eve! I was about to ask you if it was quartz sand but saw that it was gypsum. What is the consistency of this sand? like sugar? or more powdery? Just curious;-))) Bruce
