I have always been fascinated by the Banks Peninsula, Berend, years before I ever set foot in NZ. It is quite unique as a volcanic landscape, and has a very interesting social history as well.
It is a beautiful area, with many quaint elements to its landscape.
It is a great place for a holiday or for a day or two after arrival while one waits for the e weather to change for the better in the mountains of the Southern Alps. Then when the forecast is good, I head straight to the mountains.
The Banks Peninsula welcomes one in any weather.

It's nearby the airport of Christchurch, that's an advantage too Ian. Greetings Berend

As soon as one picks up the hire car or the campervan at Christchurch airport, the peninsula is a great place to begin exploring the South Island, and familiarising oneself with the culture and the roads. But, because it is a peninsula and a little out of the way, many tourists overlook this special area.
