Wisteria is one of the most majestic of all climbers. Wisteria is named after Caspar Wistar, an 18th century American professor of anatomy. There are two popular species of wisteria, Wisteria floribunda ('Japanese wisteria') and W. sinensis ('Chinese wisteria'). Japanese wisteria vines twine clockwise around the host plant (that we see our wisteria is doing), and Chinese wisteria twines counter-clockwise. Our 20-year old 'Japanese' begins flowering in the springtime, usually in first or second decades.
