A little history about the sailing vessel Western Union. It was built in Key West at Garrison Bite and sailed laying telegraph cables between the US to South America and Caribbean Islands from 1939 to 1956. When the Truman Annex was being turned over to public use many buildings were being torn down. One of these was half removed with a view inside I saw a ships wheel, a role top desk and file cabinets. I walked in and found the logs for the A K Atkinson, The Western Union and the Lightning. I used my Caterpillar truck to load up these logs and the crane on the truck to load the binnacle/wheel with the large compass in it. Went to the shop and called Captain Stedman who was the captain of these vessels. He said I will be arrested but I never gave my name. I called the Western Union museum and told them what I had. They fell over and wanted it badly.

I was honored to give them all of it but I made copies of the logs from my birthday on for 10 years. I had to get rid of pigeon lice that was all over these logs and it took a week of washing cloths/sheets because I stored them in my boat. The then present Captain of the western Union Thanked me and a plaque with my name was permanently mounted in the galley describing what I did. I have an open invitation for a free sail on the Western Union any time I want.
