Hoebek Huegelgrab mit Eiskeller

Round Barrow in Schleswig-Holstein.

A Round Barrow close to the street of Hoebek.

On top a big stone... I had to go there, take a picture...

But then I almost fall into a deep, big hole in the ground. The strangest thing I ever saw near a Round barrow! 6 or 7 metres in diamater, 3 to 4 metres deep hole built with head-sized natural stones... No fence arround it, no sign, no explanation. I couldn't think of an explanation. This hole was build a long time ago, but certainly not in stone age.

Back home I searched the internet for informations on Hoebek, and found a hint.

There is a note on Wikipedia, that there are some so called 'Eiskeller' in Hoebek. This 'Eiskeller' (Icehole) was used to keep meat fresh before electrical cooling was invented.

I didnt find any more information, and all the other 'Eiskeller' I found on the net certainly didn't look like this one. Strange, isn't it ?
